A retired Nigerian Army commander, General Anthony Atolagbe, has challenged the security operatives for making preference in the dispensation of their service to the nation's security issues. He claimed that incidents involving well-known figures in the community receive more attention than those involving regular Nigerians. He pointed out that when emergencies are reported to the police by ordinary Nigerians or some local communities, it takes longer and involves a lot of pushing and weeping before the appropriate steps are taken to investigate such situations. In an interview with Channels TV, the Rtd General made these assertions while discussing topics related to the national instability that is now roiling the nation. Speaking further, he urged that the security personnel's conduct be investigated and questioned.
According to him, "I want to say, though I'm not indicating anybody, but if you check, you will see that when there is an incident involving high-profile people, you will discover that within 24 hours you start hearing of arrest, but when something happens in other places, it takes days, perhaps crying, pushing, and pushing from the populace, before you start hearing that some suspects have been arrested. This needs to be questioned."
