In a distressing turn of events, the Mandilas Market located on Lagos Island has been consumed by a significant blaze of fire. The incident, which unfolded on January 21, 2024, saw numerous shops and business premises within the Madras Plaza, Mandilas building, succumb to the flames.

The post features a harrowing scene of a five-storey building ablaze, with onlookers watching in despair, hopeful for the timely arrival of firefighting and emergency services.
A subsequent video captured the arrival of a firefighting truck, marking the commencement of efforts to tackle the inferno.
Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, has officially acknowledged the occurrence of the Mandilas Market fire, indicating that measures are being undertaken to address the emergency.
A Similar Occurrence Last Year
On the 16th of November 2023, the stockfish section of the bustling Oyingbo market in Lagos was consumed by fire, leading to significant financial losses. Goods valued at approximately N120 million were either destroyed or looted in the chaos that ensued.
Eyewitnesses at the scene, reported the ruins of about seven shops, recently replenished with stockfish, now reduced to ashes. The remnants of the stockfish were scattered throughout the area, painting a grim picture of the aftermath.
The origins of the fire remain unknown, although traders disclosed that the blaze erupted shortly after midnight. It took firefighters over two hours to quell the flames, showcasing the intensity of the fire.
