In a captivating start to their 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, two-time champions Algeria were held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient Angola, who mounted a second-half comeback to secure a crucial point in Group D.
Algeria, boasting a star-studded lineup featuring players from Europe's top five leagues, asserted their dominance early in Bouaké. Baghdad Bounedjah showcased his goal-scoring prowess, volleying a precise over-the-top pass from Youcef Belaïli into the net, giving the Desert Warriors a deserved lead.
Despite Bounedjah's early heroics, Angola remained resolute, adapting their style in the second half. This tactical shift left them vulnerable defensively but tilted the balance in their favor. Zito Luvumbo's silky forward play teased an opportunity, and the breakthrough came when Mabululu was brought down in the box by Nabil Bentaleb. Mabululu calmly converted the ensuing penalty, sending the ball crashing off the underside of the crossbar and reigniting hopes for Angola, who dream of their first AFCON win since 2012.
Both teams pressed for a late winner, but the match ultimately concluded in a hard-fought draw. For Algeria, the frustration of not securing a victory looms large as they aim to break their winless AFCON streak since the 2019 final. Meanwhile, Angola's point against the group favorites fuels optimism, especially considering their past quarter-final runs in 2008 and 2010.
