The continent's biggest footballing showpiece, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is now upon us, and teams are all set to go all the way in Ivory Coast.

Nigeria's Super Eagles are also aiming to make a statement once the 34th edition kicks off, and backed up by an enviable flurry of attacking talents, one could hardly look past the West African nation clinching their fourth Cup of Nations trophy.

However, ahead of the start of the tournament in Ivory Coast, a report stating the Eagles could be set to be with a new captain against Equatorial Guinea has emerged.

Super Eagles captain for Equatorial Guinea clash

According to a report from media outlet OwnGoalNigeria, the Nigerian national team is expected to field a new captain against the Nzalang Nacional.

Head coach Jose Peseiro is expected not to field any of the team's regular captains.

The recognised trio of Ahmed Musa, William Troost-Ekong, and Kasimpasa's defender Kenneth Omeruo are expected to start the opening game from the bench.

The responsibility of wearing the captain's armband is likely to fall on the shoulders of Nantes forward Moses Simon.

Should Simon not make it to the starting lineup, the captaincy may be bestowed upon either Victor Osimhen or midfielder Alex Iwobi, both of whom are expected to be pivotal figures in the game. If either Osimhen or Iwobi assumes the role, it will mark their inaugural experience leading the team in an official match.

The report also suggests that the coach is inclined towards having the Fulham midfielder take the lead on the field, prioritising him over Osimhen in the captaincy decision.
