According to a report by Al Jazeera, Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip, said on Tuesday that it had seized weapons and equipment from Israeli forces during a botched rescue operation in the coastal enclave.
The group's military wing, the Qassam Brigades, displayed images and videos of what it said were Israeli firearms, explosives, and tactical gear that it captured after repelling an Israeli commando raid near the border fence on Monday night.
The raid was reportedly aimed at rescuing an Israeli soldier who was wounded in a clash with Hamas fighters earlier that day. The soldier was eventually evacuated by helicopter, but not before Hamas claimed to have inflicted casualties on the Israeli unit.
The Israeli military, however, dismissed Hamas's claims as exaggerated and said that the weapons shown by the group were obsolete and non-functional. An IDF spokesman, General Hidai Zilberman, said that the IDF had superior weaponry and that the incident did not affect Israel's security.
The capture of Israeli weapons by Hamas is seen as a propaganda coup for the group, which seeks to portray itself as a strong and defiant force against Israel. The group hopes to boost its popularity among Palestinians, especially in light of the recent reconciliation talks with its rival faction, Fatah.
The incident also reflects the high level of tension and violence in the region, as Israel and Hamas have exchanged fire and rockets in recent weeks. The event raises concerns about the possibility of a new escalation or a broader conflict between Israel and the Palestinian factions.
