Globacom Clears Air On Owing MTN Interconnect Charges

Globacom Ltd, a Nigerian telecommunications company, has vehemently denied reports suggesting it owed MTN interconnect charges. A reliable source within Globacom informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the alleged N1.6 billion debt had been paid without controversy. The denial follows a public pre-disconnection notice posted by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) on January 8, citing Glo's failure to pay outstanding interconnect charges.

The NCC notice, signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs, highlighted that despite repeated attempts at resolution, Globacom lacked significant or justifiable reasons for non-payment. The commission approved partial disconnection of Globacom from MTN in accordance with the Nigerian Communications Act (2003).

The impending disconnection, scheduled after 10 days from January 8, 2024, would prevent Globacom subscribers from making calls to MTN but allow incoming calls. A Glo official urged a proper cross-check of facts, emphasizing that the telco was not indebted to MTN. The official also highlighted Glo's pioneering role in introducing pay-per-second billing, challenging the monopoly of foreign telecom companies in Nigeria. In refuting the claims, the Glo official asserted the falseness of the report against the fully indigenous telecommunications company.
