It is not easy to get hat tricks against a team like Chelsea. Interestingly, a look at the records of the Club on Stathead website shows that only 6 players have got trebles against the Blues in the Premier League. Who are these iconic goal poachers?
The first player to do so is Dion Dublin who netted 3 times against the London club in August, 1997. It happened on the first match day of 1997/98 season. The English footballer equalized for Coventry twice in the game before getting the winner 2 minutes before regulation time. About two months afterwards, it was the turn of Patrik Berger to repeat the feat. He was involved in all of Liverpool's goals (3 goals and 1 assists) as the Reds cruised to a 4-2 win over Chelsea.
Kanu Nwankwo
Nigeria's Kanu Nwankwo of is the next man to achieve this rare feat. This Nigerian goal poacher moved to Arsenal in January, 1999. Less than 10 months later, he made history as the first non-European player to get a hat trick against Chelsea in the Premier League era. What makes it more dramatic was that the Blues were leading by goals until the 75th minute when the 1996 Olympic Football gold medalist struck his first goal of the game to have the deficit. Papillo (as he is fondly called) netted the equalizer 8 minutes later before completing the rare comeback win on the stroke of regulation time.
Robin van Persie
Dutch striker, Robin van Persie is the next guy to join this exclusive list of players. He did it for Arsenal in October, 2011. The Dutch forward netted three times and provided one assist as the Gunners registered a 5-3 wins over the Blues. This made RVP the only man to score three goals against Petr Cech in a top flight match. In 2015, it was the turn of Everton's Steven Naismith to get a pound flesh from Chelsea. His treble was enough to give the Toffees a 3-1 win in the match.
Sergio Aguero of Manchester City is the sixth guy to do so. Unlike the 5 men above, however, this Argentine did it on two different occasions. He got one hat trick against Chelsea in April, 2016 and another in February, 2019. Interestingly, the first was obtained at Stamford Bridge while the second came at Etihad Stadium.
