In a speech delivered in Doha, Qatar, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has appealed to Muslim countries to support the Palestinian Islamist movement in its war against Israel in the Gaza Strip by providing weapons.
According to Al Jazeera, Haniyeh said that the role of the Muslim nation was crucial in the conflict, which he described as the battle of Al-Aqsa, the third holiest site in Islam, located in Jerusalem.
In his words: "This is not just the battle of the Palestinian people, but the battle of Al-Aqsa and the fate of Islam," he said, according to a text transmitted to the media in the Gaza Strip.
Haniyeh's speech came as the Hamas Ministry of Health announced that the death toll in the Gaza Strip had reached 23,210 since the start of the war on October 7 last year, when Hamas commandos launched an attack on Israel that killed around 1,200 people and kidnapped more than two hundreds.
The ministry said that 126 people were killed in the last 24 hours, and that 59,167 people had been injured since October 7. It added that most of the casualties were women, teenagers and children.
The war in Gaza has been one of the deadliest and longest in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with no signs of a ceasefire or a political solution. The United Nations and other international actors have repeatedly called for an end to the violence and a resumption of peace talks, but their efforts have been met with resistance from both sides.
