Financial rules have been at the forefront of the Premier League in recent weeks and Chelsea are now awaiting an investigation into past allegations.
The Premier League and FA are continuing to investigate Chelsea over potential historical breaches of Financial Fair Play rules, according to recent reports. It comes as the top division have cracked down on the new profit and sustainability rulings over the past year, throwing it firmly into the fore.
Manchester City were the first to be charged in the modern era, following a five-year-long investigation that concluded with 115 alleged breaches. City claim they will fight against these claims, with an independent panel expected to oversee this case in the future, which is expected to take some time.
The outcome of that case for the Champions will be keenly watched by their rivals in the recent title races, with Arsenal and Liverpool their current challengers this season. That's because the punishment for any found breaches are currently unknown, however another case may have shown how tough it could be.
That is in the case of Everton, who had their allegations of financial breaches made publicly one month after City's, with the panel hearing held in October. With fewer charges, it was a simpler one to reach a conclusion on, even if there were several factors that had to be taken into consideration.
However, the independent panel found the Toffees overspent the allowed losses of £105million in any three-year period by roughly £20million. As a result, a ten-point deduction was handed to them, plunging them into a relegation scrap - though the outcome is subject to appeal.
It remains to be seen exactly what the full outcome of these situations will be, but it appears as though there are still some other issues for the Premier League to be concerned about. According to journalist David Ornstein, investigations are currently ongoing into Chelsea and historic financial records.
He said on NBC: "They've [Chelsea] still got a financial fair play issue hanging over them in the Premier League and FA investigating potential historic breaches under the Roman Abramovich era but the current ownership has held their hands up, they are complying with that process, we've got no updates just yet."
