The United Kingdom government has warned its citizens against travelling to riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River over recent attacks and targeted killings.
In addition to a travel advisory published on the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) website, British nationals were warned against all but essential travel to Abia, Anambra and Imo.
FCDO cited the series of attacks on isolated roads and in remote areas and the recent increase of indiscriminate attacks on police and security infrastructure by armed men in the states as the reason for issuing the travel advisory.
British nationals were also warned about the attacks on military installations by secessionist groups like IPOB in the South-East.
The travel advisory was also issued in some other states in the Northern and Southern regions of the country. FCDO advised against all but essential travel to Kano State, Jigawa State, Bauchi, Taraba, Niger State, Kogi State, Plateau State, Sokoto State, and the border region of Niger and Kebbi State.
Also, it warned against all travel to Kaduna State, Katsina State, Zamfara State, Borno State, Yobe State, Adamawa State, and Gombe State.
Banditry, violent attacks, frequent intercommunal clashes in the region and the high threat of being kidnapped were all cited as the reasons why British nationals should reconsider travelling to these areas.
