'You Don't Know History', Asari Dokubo Criticises Those Saying Binis Founded Lagos

Alhaji Mujahid Asari Dokubo, founder of the now-defunct Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force, has criticized those who claim that Bini people founded Lagos. The debate over the ownership of Lagos was reignited after Oba Ewuare II, the traditional ruler of Benin, visited Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos on Sunday. During his address, he stated that "it is in the history books that the Binis founded Lagos."

The Oba's statement has sparked reactions from both Lagosians and Nigerians at large, prompting some individuals to voice their opinions on the matter. The Balogun of Eko, Abisoye Oshodi, was among the first indigenous residents of Lagos to publicly challenge the claims made by Oba Ewuare II.

In a viral video released on Thursday in response to these events, Dokubo asserted that what had been achieved by this monarch was nothing more than sharing parasitic history. He said the Bini people never founded Lagos but added to the recorded history that the Benin Army attacked Lagos Island at one time.

The ex-Niger Delta militant stated that the military solely targeted the island rather than encompassing the entirety of Lagos, which extends to its hinterland.

In Dokubo's words, "Lagos belongs to the Bini people; look at how unintelligent you people are. You don't even know the distance between Benin and Lagos. You don't know history. Lagos was founded by Bini people; look at how stupid you people are.

"Useless argument. Dahomey attacked Lagos. Dahomey attacked Abeokuta. Dahomey people are in the Benin Republic and will now say they own Lagos.

"You don't know history. A Bini army attacked Ondo. Ijaw people ferried them. They went to attack Lagos Island. Not the whole of Lagos, just the island."
