Karate Kid stars Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan will join forces for a new movie in the Karate Kid franchise, it has been confirmed. While Chan starred in a reboot of The Karate Kid in 2010, a movie that was made as a separate story to that of Macchio's Daniel LaRusso and his mentor Mr Miyagi, it seems that the pair will be brought together for Sony Pictures' latest installment. Which is now set to be released December 2024.
The news comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, who also reveal that the Karate Kid movie that will bring together Macchio's Daniel LaRusso and Chan's Mr. Han will be helmed by Jonathan Entwistle, who is best known for I'm Not Okay with This and The End of the F***ing World. They also report that "the studio is positioning as the fusing and continuing the mythology of the original franchise."
Alongside Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, a global search has now begun for a Chinese actor to play the "erstwhile title character," with the two martial arts masters even releasing a video regarding the casting search for the next Karate Kid. Check out the video below:
This new Karate Kid project has been written by Rob Lieber, who is known for Sony's Peter Rabbit and Disney's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, and while plot details remain under wraps, it is revealed that "the latest iteration will bring the story to the East Coast and focus on a teen from China who finds strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor."
Sony is eyeing a release date of December, 13, 2024, with a plan in place to start shooting in the spring.

Alongside the new Karate Kid movie, the Netflix series Cobra Kai is also due to launch its sixth and final season. Cobra Kai has been a massive success since it began back in 2018, where it first debuted on YouTube Red before making the move to Netflix with its third season in 2021. The series picks up more than 30 years after the events of the beloved 80s hit The Karate Kid, taking the point of view of a down on his luck Johnny Lawrence, who makes the decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and thus rekindle of his old rivalry with Daniel LaRusso.
The story has moved on a long way since then, with Johnny and Daniel eventually joining forces against the likes of Martin Kove's John Kreese and Thomas Ian Griffith's Terry Silver, all while training a cadre of young karate enthusiasts. Cobra Kai has seen high viewership on the streaming platform, as well as being met with praise from both critics and audiences alike, with audiences excited to see the show return for a final round.
Following the recent strikes, Cobra Kai is now back in production, with the show's creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald recently revealing plans for spinoffs.
So, it looks like the future will have much in store for Karate Kid fans.
