The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, on Thursday displayed two giant African catfish that it reared at the institution's fish farm for five years.
The statement mentioned that the pair of large African catfish had weights of 12 kilograms and 14 kilograms, equivalent to the weight of a three-year-old child. These fish were raised at the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology within the institution.
On its X platform, the organization described the accomplishment, stating, "The giant African catfish, specifically the Heterobranchus longifilis, weighing between 12kg and 14kg, was featured. These fish are bred in captivity for a minimum of five years at the FUTA fish farm."
One of the department's students showcased the two African catfish, requiring both hands to lift them, and onlookers admired the display.
Providing additional information about the department's activities in fish rearing, the institution shared that Professor Oyedapo Fagbenro, an expert in fishery and aquaculture, disclosed that the cultivation of fish for educational and research purposes commenced at FUTA in 1985.
