The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was today brutalised in Owerri by the police, with his right eye completely shut. Due to the level of the beating he received, he was reportedly rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.
According to reporters, the NLC Head of Information and Publicity, Comrade Benson Upah, described the arrest and assault suffered by its president Comrade Joe Ajaero as "attempted murder."
Comrade Upah noted that contact was made with Ajaero "around 3:30 pm at the Police Hospital in Owerri from where he was taken to Federal Medical Centre, Owerri the place he is currently receiving medical attention."
Furthermore, he disclosed that Comrade Ajaero said that immediately he was arrested by the police, he was beaten up and was also blindfolded and was taken to an unknown destination, where he was brutalised and manhandled.
Upah also disclosed that Joe Ajaero's phones, money and other personal belongings were taken away from him, noting that these things have not been returned to him.
Recall that it was reported earlier today that the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, was today arrested and beaten up by the police. The reason for the arrest is still unknown.
