Chelsea are facing the prospect of having their points deducted if found guilty of breaching Premier league rules centred on alleged secret payments related to the transfers of Willian and Samuel Eto'o.
It is understood the Premier League were looking into payments of millions of pounds paid by the Blues between 2012 and 2019 under the stewardship of Roman Abramovich.
According to Football London, financial records show payments may have been made to 'Russian entities' separate from any transfer fee.
The transfers of Brazilian winger Willian and that of Samuel Eto'o are among those subjected to scrutiny.
Chelsea signed Willian for £30m from Anzhi, with his arrival coming just months after the Russian side had bought him from Shakhtar Donetsk for the same fee.
Eto'o, meanwhile, came on a free transfer on the deadline day of the 2013/14 window.
The Times now reports that the Premier League is scrutinising the financial transactions of the duo, with Chelsea facing punishment if any malpractice is detected.
Chelsea's Premier League woes
Meanwhile, the development comes at a time when the Blues are experiencing their own share of Premier League woes.
The Stamford Bridge dwellers are currently placed 11th in the Premier League standings with a paltry 12 points from 10 outings.
Their most recent outing ended in a 2-0 embarrassing defeat against Brentford at Stamford Bridge.
Mauricio Pochettino's charges will be keen to bounce back to winning ways when they take on Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Cole Palmer apologises to Pochettino
At the same time, Sports Brief reported that Chelsea summer signing, Cole Palmer has apologised for throwing a bottle at Mauricio Pochettino during the London derby against rivals Arsenal.
Palmer was among the goalscorers as the two Premier League giants played out a 2-2 draw over the weekend at Stamford Bridge.
