Thousands Stage Anti-Israel March in Morocco

Thousands of protesters have staged an anti-Israel march in Morocco, marking one of the largest since the war between Israel and Hamas escalated.

Protesters in their thousands took to the streets for a march to voice their support for Palestinians in Israel.

The Hamas group and acclaimed Palestine freedom fighters, launched an attack on Saturday morning, killing at least 700 Israelis, leaving 2,300 wounded; and took over 130 civilians and soldiers' hostage in Gaza, according to the Israeli health ministry.

In retaliation, the Israeli army initiated Operation Swords of Iron against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, killing at least 493 Palestinians and wounding over 2,750 others.

The largest anti-Israeli demonstration since the normalisation of diplomatic relations in 2020 took place in Rabat on Sunday, with thousands marching in solidarity of Palestinians in Gaza who are under blockade - in contravention of UN resolutions.

During the march, which was organised by Islamists and leftist groups, the protesters chanted: "Palestine is resisting" and "All against normalisation" as they put Israeli flags to flame.

One of the anti-Israel protesters, Charki Lahrech, said "I denounce the double standards of many Western governments regarding Palestinians," adding that some nations were ignoring Israel's retaliatory strikes following the attack by Hamas militants.

"You cannot denounce Hamas acts and look away from Israeli killing of civilians including children, women and the elderly ... This is a message of solidarity with the Palestinian people to tell them you are not alone." Lahrech said.

In the Middle East, the North African country of Morocco, which has a defence cooperation agreement with Israel, supports a two-state solution and has called for peace and the protection of all citizens.

Prior to the anti-Israeli protest in Morocco, the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has called the Hamas attack the worst that the country has ever seen. Ambassador Freeman made the statement during an interview with News Central TV anchor, Blessings Mosogu, during the NC Continental Prime programme on Tuesday.
