Apart from using the loan system as a means of getting rid of unwanted players, Chelsea also uses it to develop their young players, either for future first-team roles or to be sold for profit.
This season is no exception, as the Blues loaned out some of their most promising young players to other clubs in Europe. But which of these players has succeeded at their temporary club?
1. Angelo Gabriel.
Despite performing well in preseason, 18-year-old Brazilian winger Angelo Gabriel, who joined Chelsea from Santos during the summer transfer window, was immediately assigned to the Blues' sister club Strasbourg on loan.
Angelo has been one of the top performers among all the young players who were sent out to get important first-team minutes this season. Despite starting his Strasbourg career on the bench, the young Brazilian winger has since won a regular place in the first eleven and become one of the most important players at the French Ligue 1 club.
Angelo has played a total of seven league games for Strasbourg, according to Whoscored statistics, and his only goal contribution so far is an assist in a 1-0 victory over Metz last month, but that does not tell the full story.
The Chelsea winger has been so impressive at his temporary club that he was announced as Strasbourg's Player of the Month for September. He was also voted the Ligue 1 young player for the month of September.
2. Omari Hutchinson.
Omari Hutchinson, a 19-year-old English winger poached from Arsenal last season, was among the first set of players to leave Chelsea on loan during the summer transfer window. He was sent to newly promoted English Championship club Ipswich Town to earn regular first-team minutes.
Although it took him time to earn his place, Omari Hutchinson is now a key player in the Ipswich Town team that has surprised everyone to rank second in the championship table.
Hutchinson has played 13 games, totaling over 500 minutes for Ipswich Town, in all competitions, according to Whoscored statistics. He has scored two goals already while also providing a single assist for his teammates.
3. Cesare Casadei.
Last on our list is Cesare Casadei, the 20-year-old Italian midfielder who was sent out to Leicester City in the English Championship.
Although he has not cemented a regular place in Leicester City's first eleven, the Chelsea youngster has proven himself whenever he is given a chance.
Casadei has scored once and assisted another goal from midfield in his 11 games for Leicester City this season, according to Whoscored statistics. His only goal was a 92nd-minute winner that gave Leicester City all three points against Cardiff City.
