The Federal Government has invited the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for an emergency meeting on Sunday, October 1, 2023, in a bid to avert the planned nationwide indefinite strike by the workers.
According to Newsmen, the meeting is scheduled to take place by 2 p.m. at the State House in Abuja.
The NLC and the TUC had declared their intention to embark on a strike on October 3, 2023, to protest against the removal of fuel subsidies and the increase in electricity tariffs by the government.
The unions had also rejected the court injunction obtained by the government to restrain them from going on strike.
The government, however, said that the issues of fuel subsidy and electricity tariffs are pending before the National Industrial Court and that going ahead with the strike will amount to a gross violation of the court order.
The government also appealed to the unions to consider the economic situation of the country and the impact of the strike on the citizens.
The meeting is expected to be attended by the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Hon. Simon Lalong, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, and other high-ranking government officials.
The national leadership of both the NLC and the TUC is also expected to be present at the meeting.
