Mamelodi Sundowns have set a new record in the history of the Premier League.
The reigning DStv Premiership champions came from behind to beat Stellenbosch FC and not only set a new record but equal another.
With their victory over Stellies, The Brazilians made it 32 games in the league without defeat, ending Kaizer Chiefs' long-standing record.
Chiefs managed 31 games before Platinum Stars eventually beat them in 2005.
As noted by EWN, Sundowns last tasted defeat in the league in September 2022 when they were beaten by SuperSport United.
Sundowns' victory also meant that they have now won their first eight games of the new season. Only Kaizer Chiefs previously achieved the feat.
The Amakhosi won the first eight games of the 2014/15 season and went on to win the title that season. It was the last time that they lifted the trophy.
How Sundowns secure victory
The Brazilians were made to work for their eighth win of the season as Stellies took an early lead.
Devin Titus opened the scoring after 14 minutes, but 20 minutes later, Grant Kekana grabbed an equaliser for the champions. Aubrey Modiba then smashed in a beautiful freekick to give Sundowns a lead going into the break.
With time running out, 16-year-old Siyabonga Mabena then got his name onto the scoresheet as he tapped in from close range. The youngster was set up by Peter Shalulile and made no mistake with the finish.
Sundowns chase down history
Mamelodi Sundowns have a habit of breaking records.
The reigning DStv Premiership champions have dominated South African football in recent years and have broken many records in the process, Sports Brief reported.
The Brazilians already hold the records for most wins in a season, most wins in succession, most home wins in a 30-game season, and most goals in a season, to name a few.
