Countries That Have Largest Squads In 2023 AFCON Qualifiers

More than fifty countries have participated in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. A look at the squad records of the participants shows the largest among them used 40 or more players in the competition. Let us take a look at these large teams.

Captain Of Senegal National Team

The biggest squad in the tournament is the Senagelese national team. The Teranga Lions have used 48 men in the qualifiers. These footballers have an average age of 27.6 years. Interestingly, only three of them played in as many as five games. These are winger Sadio Mané as well as midfielders Idrissa Gueye and Nampalys Mendy. It is worthy of note that Mane is the top scorer among them with five goals to his credit. The youngest player to man involved in any match for Senegal is Amara Diouf who was only 15 years old on debut.

The Mediterranean Knights of Libya are next on the list. The North African side have used 46 men in the course of the 2023 qualifying series. These Libyans have average age of 26.9 which is one of the youngest from that part of the continent. The oldest Libyan player involved is Naji Dura who is based in Saudi Arabia. The youngest among them is Fahd Al Mesmary. They are aged 35 years and 19 years respectively. Only two men from team, Hussein Taktak and Saleh Taher - scored in the course of the qualifiers. Coincidentally, they have one goal each.

The Desert Warriors of Algeria are the only other team that have as many as 40 players during the qualifiers. The Algerians are the only country that have more points (16) than Nigeria (15) during the qualifying series. A look at the Fennecs shows that they have an average age of 27.3 years. There is only one Algerian teenager involved in the series. He is 18-year-old Badredine Bouanani who plies his trade at Nice in France. This winger is 19 years younger than the oldest member of the squad, Raïs M'Bolhi.
