What happened to the 13 players who left Manchester United this summer

There were plenty of Man United exits this summer and we've taken a look at where the 13 players who were in and around the first-team set-up who left the club are now

It was not just incomings that dominated the headlines at Old Trafford over the summer.

Seven new arrivals joined Manchester United as Erik ten Hag aims to build on last season's third-place finish and Carabao Cup triumph. Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana were the three high-profile additions as the Reds look to compete on four fronts this campaign.

However, an extortionate wage bill meant something or, in this case, someone, had to give as not everyone could fit into United's squad. Ten Hag was busy right up until the final hours of the window, with plenty of players allowed to leave.

In total, 10 players from in and around the first-team set-up saw their time at Old Trafford come to an end permanently, with a further three leaving on loan. Ahead of the Premier League's resumption next weekend, the Manchester Evening News has looked at what came next.

Dean Henderson

Henderson's impressive two-year loan stint at Sheffield United had many believing he was the heir to David de Gea's throne. However, Ten Hag kept faith in the Spaniard last season and Henderson was loaned out to Nottingham Forest, where he performed well until injury curtailed his campaign. Signing Andre Onana signalled the end of the 26-year-old's first-team chances and Crystal Palace pounced near the end of the window.

David de Gea

Somewhat surprisingly, De Gea - who amassed 545 appearances for United - is still without a club after his contract expired in July. The goalie was expected to be offered a new deal until a dramatic U-turn ended his 12-year stay at Old Trafford. At 32, Dea Gea still has years ahead of him and he is believed to have received offers from the Saudi Pro League

Axel Tuanzebe

Another player who ended up on the United scrapheap in July. Tuanzebe showed signs of promise when he broke through under Jose Mourinho but ultimately failed to push ahead of more experienced defenders. Championship side Ipswich Town snapped him up on a free transfer in midweek.

Anthony Elanga

Elanga was always going to be Premier League quality but an abundance of widemen was always going to frustrate the Swede. He has already hit the ground running since making a £15million switch to Forest, scoring the winner in a shock 1-0 win at Chelsea last weekend.

Alex Telles

One of the club's more questionable signings in recent years. Despite arriving as a Brazil international with a solid reputation, United fans never saw the best of Telles. He joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.

Matej Kovar

The goalkeeper arrived as a 17-year-old in 2018 but failed to make a single appearance for the club. He moved to Bayer Leverkusen in August.

Fred

Although his performances improved, Fred's hefty price tag meant he ultimately flopped at Old Trafford. United recouped just £10million of the £52million they paid five years ago when he joined Fenerbahce last month.

Eric Bailly

Like Fred, big things were expected of Bailly when Mourinho signed him. Injuries would ultimately prove the Ivorian's downfall and a loan move to Marseille last year also failed to kick-start his Reds career. Turkish giants Besiktas snapped Bailly up on a free transfer in midweek.

Alvaro Fernandez

A Spain Under-21 international, Fernandez was named the club's Under-23 Player of the Year in 2022. Loaning him out to Granada could provide the foundations for a fruitful United career.

Zidane Iqbal

Iqbal never forced his way into the first-team picture, despite signs of promise in pre-season last year. Dutch outfit Utrecht signed the youngster in the summer.

Phil Jones

It is easy to forget that Jones won the Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson. Injuries would also prove his downfall as he made just six top-flight appearances in his final four seasons. At 31, another club could well take a punt on Jones. The defender returned to United in recent weeks to help coach academy sessions.

Brandon Williams

Williams, capable of playing either side at full-back, has again been sent out on loan. This time he has joined Ipswich, where he is linking up with former United teammate Tuanzebe.

Mason Greenwood

Charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour against Greenwood were dropped in February but, following an internal club investigation, it was decided he would continue his career away from Old Trafford. Getafe have since signed the forward on a season-long loan.
