What is a man and what are the qualities of a real man? For several years masculinity has been under attack. The attacks against masculinity have led multitudes of young boys and many men to be confused about what it really means to be a real man.
Below are 7 Qualities of a Real Man
1. A real man embraces his Male Gender and MasculinityA man is an adult biological male. A good man accepts and embraces the fact that God made him a biological male and that God did not make a mistake in assigning him the male gender.
In the beginning God only made two genders. God created Adam who was a male (Genesis 2:7) and then later God made Eve who was a female (Genesis 2:18-23).
So one of the first steps to becoming a real man is to accept your gender as a biological man who was created by God and made in His image.
1 Corinthians 13:11 says: When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.
In a world plagued by LGBTQ ideology, gender dysphoria and false ideologies which attack masculinity, it's important for men to unapologetically embrace their male gender and perform the God-given roles that come with becoming a man.
2. A real man is Courageous & StrongFor centuries, one of the reasons why soldiers are mostly men is because men are willing to face an enemy without the fear of death. Men go to war to protect their country, family and children. It takes courage to go into battle with the probability of facing death which is the ultimate sacrifice.
Furthermore, in society men should not be afraid to speak the truth or stand for righteousness, even in the face of persecution. Men must be filled with the moral strength to fight for the right principles and values.
Real men are not afraid to face life's challenges and problems. A man should be willing to grow and mature through life's tests and trials because real men do not run or hide from every problem. Real men do not sweep issues under the rug, but they are willing to be transparent, take the bull by the horns, and become a problem solver.
It takes courage and tenacity to face difficult situations. For men, problems are an opportunity to grow and become stronger.
1 Corinthians 16:13 says: Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
3. A real man is not Governed by Emotions and FeelingsA man must have emotional intelligence because it allows him to understand and express his feelings appropriately. Emotional intelligence helps men to make decisions based on what's best in the long term, rather than acting out of impulse and immediate gratification.
So real men are not easily controlled by their impulses and emotions. With men: facts do not care about your feelings.
So our emotions cannot always be trusted because feelings change depending on external circumstances or current events.
However real men are not governed by feelings alone, instead men live according to facts, truth, principles, goals and the desire to accomplish. Real men do not focus on the short-term pain or gain, but instead they look towards the long-term benefit and rewards even in the midst of challenges, opposition or persecution.
A real man has self-discipline or self-control. He masters his emotions instead of allowing his emotions to master him.
2 Peter 1:5-7 says: In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God's promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.
4. A real man is a Provider for his familyA man must work and provide for his family. He must not be lazy and nor should he be an absent father or absent husband. Instead a real man must sacrificially work and provide for his wife and children.
1 Timothy 5:8 says: But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
5. A real man Respects womenWhether single or married, real men do not see women simply as sexual objects meant to fulfill sexual lusts and fantasies. Real men do not exploit women. Real men do not resort to violence against women whether in the home or anywhere else. Both male and females are made in God's image and therefore every person is of value in God's eyes.
Colossians 3:19 says: Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
1 Peter 3:7 says: Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
6. A real man is a Leader and Protector of his familyA man is called by God to be the head of his wife and family. A real man strives to be a good husband and a good father and to be a good leader in the home.
Ephesians 5:22-23 says: Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
1 Corinthians 11:3 says: But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.
Men are called to be spiritual leaders in their family. When Adam and Eve sinned after being tempted by the serpent, God ultimately blamed Adam for listening to Eve instead of protecting and leading Eve away from the serpent's temptation. Genesis 3:17 says: And to Adam He (God) said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;"
7. A real man has Good Moral VirtuesReal men are guided by good moral values such as love, honesty, integrity, humility and righteousness. Men should not be driven by narcissistic or self-centered behavior.
Real men learn from their mistakes and continuously strive to become a better man, a better husband and a better father.
Without a moral compass, men cannot lead in the home; they cannot have self-control; they cannot become a good mentor for young boys.
1 Timothy 6:11 says: But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.
True moral values are found in reading and knowing the word of God. It is through God's scriptures that we understand God's standard for moral living.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
All men are called to godliness and relationship with God. Real men will respond to God's call of salvation through Christ, because God alone can help men to become the best version of themselves.
