Sky Sports pundit warns Rasmus Hojlund not to follow £88.5m Chelsea flop

New Manchester United signing Rasmus Hojlund has earned rave reviews after a promising debut against Arsenal.

Rasmus Hojlund made a lively debut for Manchester United at the weekend. A strong first impression saw him praised by Gary Neville, lauded on Match of the Day, and the MUTV analysts were thrilled with what they saw too.

It was an impressive 25 minutes from the Dane, who arguably should have been awarded a penalty too.

One person who is not getting carried away is former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson, who has suggested the first impression could be misleading.

Merson warns Hojlund

Paul Merson told Sky Sports that he is worried Hojlund could still go the same way as Chelsea flop Mykhailo Mudryk.

Mudryk impressed on his debut for Chelsea and has then faded, yet to score a Premier League goal since arriving at Stamford Bridge for £88.5 million in January.

Merson said: "Rasmus Hojlund looked good - a right handful. But that was for 20 minutes.

"I saw Mykhailo Mudryk for 20 minutes at Liverpool in January and I haven't seen him since."

Rasmus Hojlund is the real deal

It would help Rasmus Hojlund to get an early goal or two and take some pressure off himself, but the striker shouldn't worry too much, the goals will come as he plays more games.

Even without the goals, the Danish striker's all-round game lifted Manchester United's attacking threat when he came on, with his direct running and hold-up play adding elements to the team which simply were not there before.

There will be some doubters after his £64 million move, questioning whether he can live up to that value. But let's give him some credit based on what we have seen so far.

It is just 20 minutes, but the early signs look quietly encouraging.
