In Gabon, the soldiers who carried out the military coup that deposed President Ali Bongo from his position have designated General Brice Oligui Nguema as the 'Transitional President' of the country.
According to a report by Newsmen, General Nguema held the position of commander of Gabon's Republican Guard, which played a leading role in orchestrating the coup that removed the democratically elected President Ali Bongo.
The senior military figures involved in the coup nullified the recently concluded general elections in Gabon, which had resulted in President Bongo's re-election. They claimed that irregularities had marred the election, justifying their intervention for the sake of the Gabonese people's interests.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria also commented on the recent coup in Gabon, where a military junta removed President Ali Bongo from power.
According to Newsmen, top military officers made an appearance on Gabonese national television to announce the end of the existing regime and the annulment of an election that had declared President Ali Bongo Ondimba as the winner.
In response to the situation, President Tinubu expressed his deep concern about the political scenario and the socio-political stability within Gabon.
Through his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu emphasized that the principles of the rule of law and a commitment to resolving electoral disputes through constitutional means should not be allowed to deteriorate in Africa.
