Laurent Blanc has called for his own sacking after claiming that his club Lyon need to change their manager to improve
Lyon's Laurent Blanc has asked the club's management to sack him to remove him from his role as manager in order to improve their fortunes on the pitch after a disappointing start to Ligue 1.
Lyon manager asks club to sack him
Lyon have lost both of their league games so far in the new 2023/24 season, carrying on from a poor campaign last season when they finished seventh in the league, and Blanc has recently stated that he believes the club could stand to gain from changing the current manager, which happens to be him.
This season, the former Barcelona and Manchester United defender has already seen his side lose to Strasbourg and Montpellier, both of whom fought to avoid relegation from Ligue 1 last season and appears to be at his wit's end.
Speaking after a humiliating 4-1 loss to Montpellier, Blanc told Prime Video what he believed would be the solution to Lyon's ongoing problems, saying, "You have to change the manager."
Blanc believes his departure could help Lyon
Despite his declaration that the manager has to leave, Blanc was still adamant that he wanted to stay on the job, and when asked if he was trying to resign, he answered, "No, but you're asking me what has to be done, and I'm saying you might have to change the manager."
The onus is now on Lyon's management to either accept or reject Blanc's words, with the manager effectively throwing his own future up for speculation with his statements.
L'OL have won only one of their last eight matches, including pre-season friendlies, losing all the remaining seven, and are also in dire financial straits which are leaving the future of the club as a whole in the balance.
