Since ECOWAS Threatened War with Niger, There's Been a Spike in Terrorist Attacks in Nigeria- Akunna

In the wake of the reported killing of 26 Nigerian soldiers during an ambush by terrorists in Niger State a few days ago, veteran journalist, and Newspaper publisher, Chuks Akunna has come out to explain that the horrific attack might be connected to the ongoing faceoff between the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the military junta that has seized power in the Republic of Niger.

Speaking during an interview on Africa Independent Television's 'Kaakaki' program on Friday, August 18, Akunna, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority Newspaper, opined that since ECOWAS threatened to invade Niger Republic over the military coup that took place in the french-speaking nation, Nigeria, has witnessed an upsurge in terrorist activities in the northern region of the country.

The veteran journalist went on to point out that by virtue of the boarder they share, Niger Republic has always been a buffer zone for Nigeria by shielding it from the host of terrorist organizations running amok in the Sahel region of Africa.

He said, "Niger Republic has been a buffer for us because if you look at the geography of Nigeria, you will see that from Sokoto all the way to parts of Niger State, you'll see that the Republic of Niger has a border with us. How come it is since when ECOWAS threatened war with the junta in the Niger Republic that there has been a spike in terrorist attacks in Nigeria.

If you recall, towards the twilight of the Buhari administration, these issues of terrorist attacks literally evaporated. But now, you see that there is a resurgence in the activities of these terrorist."
