In preparation for the Senate's screening of ministerial nominees, Atiku Abubakar, the People's Democratic Party's (PDP) presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, is working on preventing the confirmation of former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, as disclosed by THE SUN newspaper.
Following the announcement of Wike's inclusion in President Tinubu's ministerial list, Atiku convened a meeting with fellow party leaders in Abuja to address concerns about safeguarding the party's influence and thwarting Wike's confirmation. Inside sources revealed two possible approaches the PDP leaders may take to achieve this goal. Firstly, PDP senators loyal to Atiku could present a petition during the Senate session today. Alternatively, they may resort to a motion of urgent national importance on the Senate floor to seek Wike's disqualification if time is limited.
The success of these plans relies heavily on the endorsement of the Minority Caucus in the Senate. Uncertainties surround Minority Leader Simon Davou Mwadkwon's stance, given his reported alignment with Wike, which might deter his support for such actions.
Additionally, Senate President Godswill Akpabio's response will be critical, as he holds the authority to accept or reject any motion or petition introduced by the opposition.
In response, Wike and his supporters held a strategic meeting with some senators in Abuja to devise a counterstrategy. However, concerns have been raised by a South-South senator known for his loyalty to Wike, warning that such actions by the PDP could cause disruptions in Senate proceedings.
Speculations suggest that Wike might undergo an early screening to preempt Atiku's camp's intentions, and he might receive a lenient questioning, possibly being allowed to "take a bow and go."
