Manchester United fans may not like the Glazers' "preferred option" to take over the club

The Glazers

The Glazers have been tipped to keep hold of Manchester United in what would be a crushing blow to Red Devils fans, with mounting reasons for the hugely unpopular American owners to keep hold of the club and snub lucrative offers from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The stringency of Premier League checks means that the Glazers will still be in place for United's opening game of the season against Wolves, even if a deal is formally thrashed out before then.

Many Red Devils supporters hoped that either Sir Jim or Sheikh Jassim would be in place to implement their ambitious plans over the current transfer window, although the Glazers and Raine Group - the bank handling the sale - are taking a painstaking approach to the process.

And as the saga drags on into a ninth month, The Daily Mail claim that keeping hold of the club until there is more demand could now be the Glazers' preferred option.

The Glazers have never explicitly stated that they are committed to selling Man Utd

The American billionaires set a £6billion asking price when announcing last November that strategic alternatives were being explored behind the scenes. Bids launched by both Sir Jim and Sheikh Jassim are reported to be around the £5bn mark.

Another enticing option for the Glazers may be to invite sufficient minority investment to renovate Old Trafford and keep fans happy. However, supporters are unlikely to be pleased with any scenario that sees the current owners remain in place, having staged regular protests in recent years.
