Rivers State police arrest two policemen for assaulting an unarmed civilian

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested two police officers for their involvement in the assault of a young man in front of an eatery in Obigbo near Port Harcourt.

The policemen were captured in a viral video assaulting the young man for a yet-to-be-stated reason, prompting the state's Commissioner of Police, Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka to order their arrest.

In the video circulating on social media, about five policemen were filmed dragging the young man who should be in his early 30s in front of Crunches eatery, Oyigbo,

The incident happened a few days after the CP had charged the command's Monitoring Unit to monitor the activities of police officers in the command, warning that any officer found wanting would be dealt with in accordance with the extant law of the Nigeria Police.

The spokesperson of the state's police command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the CP vehemently condemned the conduct of the policemen, noting that they have been identified and arrested and being tried.

He appealed to the victim to, "come forward to the Public Relations Department, Rivers State Police Command to give his own statement so as to aid conclusion of the investigations and his identity will be protected."

He added: "The Command hereby appeal to the victim to come forward to the Public Relations Department, Rivers State Police Command to give his own statement so as to aid the conclusion of the investigations and his identity will be protected.

"The commissioner of Police assures members of the public, that the police operatives will be investigated in line with extant rules underlying the conduct of police personnel and appropriate sanctions meted accordingly.

"The command further assures the good people of Rivers State of its unalloyed commitment to promoting the rule of law.
