Transfer: Why we walked away from Declan Rice deal - Man City

Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano has revealed why the club walked away from signing Declan Rice from West Ham United.

Former England women's international Eni Aluko had suggested that Manchester City were never really interested in signing Rice, claiming that Pep Guardiola just wanted to help his friend Mikel Arteta get the England international.

But Soriano has now revealed that the Cityzens' interest was genuine, adding that they had to pull out when the bidding began to reach north of £100 million.

"If you look at what we did at the start of this project, there was a need for a lot of changes and investment - but not anymore," he said, according to talkSPORT.

"We are not the top net spenders of last year or the last three or five years. We have a platform where we know what to do and we can do it with time and intelligence.

"When we don't like a deal, we walk away, and we don't panic."
