La Liga president Javier Tebas has admitted that he wanted to see Argentina captain Lionel Messi return to Barcelona.
Tebas, however, still backed Barcelona to bring in big players this summer as they did with Robert Lewandowski last summer after missing out on bringing Messi back to Camp Nou.
Barcelona were pushing to sign Messi but needed more time to get their financial situation sorted.
Messi eventually announced that he would be joining Inter Miami once his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires at the end of this month.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Tebas admitted that he wanted Messi back in La Liga.
Tebas was quoted by Barca Blaugrana as saying:
"As a fan and as president of La Liga, I would have liked to have Messi in our league. Things are what they are and circumstances come as they come.
"I'm sure Barcelona will bring a great player, apart from the ones they have. They brought Lewandowski, who we have already seen the level he has given. I wish he had come, but what can we do?"
