Former Premier League star Jermaine Pennant has revealed that he was also guilty of whatever Lionel Messi has done to attract a punishment from Paris Saint-Germain
He recalled how he was slammed with a whopping fine of €100,000 for abandoning training for a champagne-fueled weekend in Marbella.
The former Liverpool star stated while reacting to Messi suspension by PSG for two weeks without pay after the Argentina international attended an unsanctioned trip to Saudi Arabia
Pennant, who was a subject of some controversial moments in his career and shared an anecdote about one particular misjudgement that cost him dearly - just like Messi.
"I'd just signed for this team in Spain - Real Zaragoza," he told talkSPORT.
"It was the closing party of Marbella and it was going off. You had to be there at any cost.
"So, I came up with an elaborate story. I kicked off, I made a fuss. I said to the coach, 'Look, I need to get back to England.
"I'm not proud, I was a bit reckless in my playing days.
"The biggest fine I got was just shy of a month's wages which was €100,000 (£90,000)."
Pennant said that within 45 minutes it was all over the place that he was in Marbella, with the player even missing training the next day.
