Ogun farmer's corpse disappears from mortuary

Four people have been arrested after the body of a farmer, Joel Omirenya, disappeared from the Sacred Heart Hospital's mortuary in the Lantoro area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Omirenya, 86, was admitted to the Sacred Heart Hospital after he became ill at home.

Sadly, he died at the hospital in February and his body was placed in the hospital's mortuary.

The deceased's relatives found the corpse intact each time they visited to pay for the corpse to be preserved.

Family members had concluded plans to convey the farmer's corpse to their hometown in Benue State when the corpse went missing from the mortuary.

The children of the deceased had notified the hospital management on Friday, March 21, of their plan to take their father's body for burial and asked that the body be dressed on Sunday, March 23.

However, when the children got to the mortuary for the dressing of the corpse on Sunday, March 23, having paid every required bill, they could not find the body.

A wake for the deceased was already taking place at his residence in Ewekoro, Ogun State, and the family had paid to hire an ambulance to convey the corpse to their hometown when they realised the corpse had disappeared.

All efforts to find the body proved abortive.

Two mortuary attendants, an auditor, and a plumber have now been arrested over the mysterious disappearance of the corpse.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident.

Oyeyemi also confirmed the arrest of four persons in connection with the missing corpse.
