Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag embarrassed superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo by axing the Portugal international right before the younger players prior to the match against Liverpool, The Sun reports.
The former Real Madrid and Juventus superstar was dropped by the Dutchman for the game which his team went on to win 2-1 at Old Trafford.
The manager announced the decision in a two-hour meeting before the game after two woeful performances which saw them fall to lowly rated Brighton and Brentford.
The Sun says that Ten Hag held a clear-the-air meeting with the players and used the opportunity to inform the players that the Portugal football icon, alongside club's captain, Harry Maguire would not start against Liverpool.
According to the report, the former Ajax boss "laid down the law" to his players and gave a "no-nonsense address" to the squad in which he said any player is free to leave if they do not want to play under his management.
It was also in the meeting that Ten Hag told Rashford that he would be leading United's attack instead of Ronaldo.
The report also claims that the Dutchman has made a U-turn on Ronaldo's future at the club and would rather the former Real Madrid man leaves Old Trafford for good.
Ten Hag is said to be unhappy with the uncertainty over the 37-year-old's future.
