EPL: Ian Wright shocked Fernandes didn't allow Ronaldo take penalty in Man United 3-1 defeat against Arsenal

Former Arsenal striker, Ian Wright, was shocked that Bruno Fernandes did not allow Cristiano Ronaldo take the penalty for Manchester United during their 3-1 defeat at Arsenal on Saturday.

The Gunners beat the Red Devils 3-1 at the Emirates, Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka and Granit Xhaka on the scoresheet.

Cristiano Ronaldo pulled one back for the Red Devils but United failed to build on that with Bruno Fernandes missing a spot kick to bring them to level.

Referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot for a Tavares handball, giving United the chance to draw level but it was not Ronaldo who stepped up to take the penalty.

It was his country teammate, Fernandes, who subsequently hit the post, much to the delight of Arsenal's fans and players.

And Gunners legend Wright could simply not believe Fernandes was allowed to take the penalty, posting on Twitter: "Not letting Ronaldo take it???" accompanied by a photo of Wright looking shocked.

Ronaldo had taken Manchester United's last three spot kicks since Fernandes blazed one over the bar in the loss to Aston Villa.

Manchester United's defeat to Arsenal have almost put an end to their hopes of making a top four finish and qualifying for the Champions League this season.

Manchester United remain 6th in the Premier League table, six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal and three behind Tottenham in 5th place ahead of Spurs' game against Brentford later today.
