EPL: Referees' boss calls Lampard to apologize over penalty decision against Man City

Head of Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL), Mikel Riley, has personally contacted Everton manager, Frank Lampard and club chairman Bill Kenwright, over a controversial call that denied the Toffees a late penalty in their Premier League game against Manchester City.

The Merseyside club were left fuming when handball shouts against City midfielder, Rodri were waved away by centre referee Paul Tierney.

VAR checks also took sides with Tierney over the decision.

After the game, Lampard blasted officials in charge and chief executive Denise Barret-Baxendale wrote to top-flight chief football officer, Tony Scholes demanding an explanation.

Riley has now contacted Lampard and Kenwright in a bid to explain the decisions made in the fixture at Goodison Park on February 26.

Everton are understood to "appreciate the acknowledgement" but remain less than satisfied at the outcome of an unfortunate sequence of events that cost them a priceless point in an ongoing bid to avoid relegation out of the Premier League.
