Super Eagles interim boss, Austine Eguavoen has given reasons for his decision to start Umar Sadiq ahead of strikers in the squad.
The Super Eagles beat Guinea Bissau 2-0 on Wednesday to take all nine points from their group stage matches, having beaten Egypt and Sudan in their earlier two games.
Sadiq put the Super Eagles ahead before captain Williams Troost-Ekong lashed onto a rebound from Moses Simon's strike to make it two.
Umar Sadiq, who plays for Spain's second division club Almeria had earlier missed some glorious chances to put Eguavoen's side ahead.
Eguavoen pointed out that Sadiq came into the tournament with a good record, scoring week in week for his club side.
"Umar Sadiq I kept talking to him because he's a player who has played for Roma, now he's in Spain scoring goals and the first two games he came in he couldn't really find his feet for whatever reason because he's just coming into a big tournament, maybe it was too big," Eguavoen told his post-match press conference.
"However, I think he's performed well and we just wanted to start him today to see how he'll react and I think he did very well."
