Nigerian striker wins Golden Shoe award

Nigerian striker, Paul Onuachu has been named the winner of the 2021 Belgian Golden Shoe award.

The Belgian First Division A disclosed this in a tweet via their Twitter handle on Wednesday night.

It tweeted, "Paul Onuachu wins the Golden Boot! Congrats, Paul!".

Onuachu has now become the first-ever Nigerian and the fourth African to claim the prestigious prize.

The three Africans that have won the award in the past before Onuachu are Ivory Coast's Aruna Dindane in 2003, Morocco's Mbark Boussoufa in 2006 and 2010, and Democratic Republic of Congo's Dieumerci Mbokani in 2012.

Onuachu, who currently plays for Genk, was rewarded for a brilliant 2021 campaign in which he was unstoppable in front of goal.

The 27-year-old scored an incredible 29 league goals over the entire 2020-21 season and added another 12 in the first half of the current campaign.

The Super Eagles attacker polled 333 votes to beat Club Brugge duo, Noa Lang (272 votes) and Charles De Ketelaere (271 votes) to win the Golden Shoe.

Onuachu is currently recuperating from an injury that kept him out of Nigeria's squad at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cameroon.
