EPL: Premier League to take decision on suspending all festive fixtures today

Premier League clubs will on Monday consider triggering a Christmas circuit-breaker at an emergency summit, according to SportsMail.

Senior representatives from all the 20 top-flight sides, will meet to discuss what has been described as a 'festive firebreak', as the Omicron variant of COVID-19 continues to rip through the fixture schedule.

Last weekend, six of the 10 Premier League games were called off.

The firebreak could involve postponing one round of fixtures from December 28 to 30.

However, it remains to see if at least 14 of the 20 clubs will support it, as some such as Tottenham, have already had an enforced rest.

The financial ramifications of reneging on the various TV deals are expected to be tabled at the meeting, along with the fact that there is little space in the calendar due to the disruption caused by a winter World Cup in Qatar.

The impact on player welfare will also be discussed. Players who are yet to be vaccinated will also be on the agenda. But it is unlikely that those who refuse the jab will find themselves segregated in training and travel.
