Amaju Pinnick, the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has explained why Gernot Rohr was sacked as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
Rohr was fired on Sunday after a virtual meeting of the NFF executive committee.
Former captain and current NFF Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen, has been put in charge of the three-time African champions.
Pinnick has now said the decision was taken to forestall a "disaster" waiting to happen.
"It wasn't an individual decision; it was a collective decision from the committee.
"We didn't want a disaster to happen before taking the decision," Pinnick said on Monday while speaking on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily.
Pinnick also said the last two matches under Rohr were abysmal and Nigeria would not have qualified for the last round of the 2022 World Cup if not for providence.
The NFF President also said the 68-year-old failed to enforce discipline in the squad, adding that there were so many things not known to the public on the matter.
