EPL could block Ronaldo from wearing number 7 shirt after Man Utd return

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has suggested that Premier League rules could stop Cristiano Ronaldo from taking the number 7 shirt at the club.

Ferdinand admits that Edinson Cavani who currently wears the shirt is ready to give it up, if the league approves.

However, it could be difficult, if United have already registered their squad numbers.

The Red Devils officially confirmed that Ronaldo would be returning to Old Trafford 12 years after he left.

The 36-year-old famously wore the No.7 shirt during his first spell and continued to wear it at Real Madrid and Juventus.

Ferdinand said on FIVE YouTube Show: "Just to think Cavani could be the back-up for Ronaldo, it's unbelievable.

"Cavani, I have to say, what a man! He saw who was coming to town and gave up the No.7 shirt."

At this point, Ferdinand started to backtrack, continuing: "Maybe? I don't know! Does he do that or not?

"At the end of the day you know what the problem might be is that the shirts have been registered, maybe. And that might be an issue. So he might not be able to be No.7 so we'll see."
