Euro 2020 final: Lampard blames one England player for penalty shootout loss to Italy

Former Chelsea midfielder, Frank Lampard has criticised Marcus Rashford over the technique he employed during England's penalty shootout against Italy.

Lampard believes that Rashford's style made it more difficult for the Manchester United man during England's defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

Manchester United left back, Luke Shaw gave England an early lead but Italy were able to force extra time and penalties after Leonardo Bonucci equalised in the second half.

Rashford and Jadon Sancho were introduced a few minutes to the end of the second half extra-time for the purpose of the penalty shootout.

But both players missed their penalties with Rashford being the first England player to miss his, as he sent Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way but his effort struck the post.

Sancho and Bukayo Saka also missed their spot kicks which were all saved by Donnarumma to hand Italy the trophy.

And Lampard noted that Rashford's stuttering penalty technique is difficult to pull off in a high-pressure situation.

"I've never taken a penalty with that style. I always consider there's a penalty [style] for me and many takers take them very well," Lampard told the BBC.

"But in the training ground behind closed doors, that shuffle and wait [which Rashford used] is much easier.

"With the pressure of what this game brings, it's harder. You can't over-analyse this now, it's a horrible moment."
