Barcelona legend Carles Puyol says he has spoken with Lionel Messi concerning his future at Barcelona but added that “everyone decides what they want.”
Puyol, a Barcelona legend, also spoke on the club’s current form and their hopes of winning the league and Copa del Rey titles.
Barcelona are currently on an 18-match unbeaten run and Puyol feels there’s been a change of energy among the players, adding that the coach, Ronald Koeman and his team deserve credit.
Messi has up till now refused to extend his contract with the Catalan giants and will be a free agent at the end of next season.
“I recently spoke with Messi when he equaled Xavi. I see him well, with desire. It would be very good news for the Catalans if he stays, I think he is in the best place, but everyone decides what they want and it will be necessary to understand and respect the decision he makes,” Puyol told RAC1.
He added, “There has been a change of energy in the team, I see the team doing well, with enthusiasm, it was seen in the comeback in the Copa del Rey.
“From the outside it looks the players are happy with Koeman, who is a legend of the club, he is doing a good job, he deserves respect and trust, then at the end of the season the assessments will be made.”
