Liverpool superstar Virgil Van Dijk together with USA female player Megan Rapinoe have been named the winners of the Goal 50 awards.
Virgil Van Dijk is the first defender ever to win the award following his superb performances for Liverpool since the past two seasons.
34-year-old American Megan Rapinoe was recognized for the big award because of her incredible goalscoring form at the Women's World Cup.
Van Dijk defeated the duo of Lionel Messi and Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah to win the award for the first time.
This award caps a remarkable year for Virgil Van Dijk who played a good role in helping Liverpool win the Champions League title beating Tottenham in the final.
"I am very proud to have been named at No.1 in Goal 50 for 2019. To be recognized among the great players in world football is very special for me,''. Van Dijk told Goal.
The Goal 50 is an annual award that brings together the world's 50 best male and female players.
Meanwhile, Virgil Van Dijk is expected to face serious competition from the duo of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the 2019 Ballon d'Or award.
