Nigeria vs Tunisia: Why Mikel Obi will not play for Super Eagles in third-place playoff

Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has been ruled out of the Africa Cup of Nations third-place playoff by coach Gernot Rohr.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the match, Rohr disclosed that the midfielder picked up an injury in training and will not have recovered in time for the clash.

"Mikel picked up an injury yesterday and couldn't train so it is unlikely that he will play.

"He's had a good tournament and we must remember there are people who participated in the qualifiers who are not here. He's here because he accepted to come without preconditions," the German said.

Mikel Obi has only played in two games at this year's AFCON - the first and last Group B fixtures against Burundi and Madagascar respectively.
