Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is planning to sign a second midfielder, once Manchester United finalise talks with Newcastle United for Sean Longstaff, the UK Telegraph reports.
United will lodge an official offer this week for Longstaff, who is valued at around £25million by his club.
Solskjaer is desperate for reinforcements this summer and is focusing his efforts on bringing in young English talent.
But it is understood that Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes is still a top target.
United are concentrating on completing one signing at a time, after lengthy negotiations with Swansea for Daniel James and Crystal Palace for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Solskjaer has told United to sign Longstaff, but will also move for Fernandes, even if Paul Pogba stays at Old Trafford.
Fernandes is the Norweigen's preferred option. However, United are also considering Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez.
