Though there have been strong arguments about Ronaldo and Lionel Messi finishing as winner for a respective sixth time.
The UEFA Nations League became the newest addition to international competitions when it was flagged off in September last year.
However, Ronaldo's impeccable contributions for club and country this season could hand him the award once again.
Here are three reasons that could propel him to win the award
1. He led his country to UEFA Nations League glory
Ronaldo captained Portugal to win the inaugural edition of the UEFA Nations League scoring three goals in two matches.
The tournament is a recognized event in UEFA's calendar and this could give him the upper hand against his contemporaries for the award.
2. He delivered when it mattered the most
The 34-year-old has been known to rise to the occasion when it mattered the most in his career and in the 2018-19 season, the Portuguese has continued to maintain his status as a world class player.
Ronaldo single-handedly overturned Juventus round of 16 Champions League second leg tie against Atletico Madrid, scoring three goals despite losing 2-0 in the first leg.
He also scored his 53rd career hat-trick against Switzerland in their Nations League semi final clash as Portugal won by 3-1.
3. He performed excellently well last season
Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk has been tipped by many bookmakers to emerge winner of the Ballon d'Or ahead of Messi and Ronaldo.
But the Dutchman only won the Champions League and failed to lead his country to UEFA Nations League glory against Ronaldo's Portugal.
On the other hand, Van Dijk failed to win the Premier League but Ronaldo won the Serie A title and the maiden edition of the Nations League.
