Serena Williams makes huge blunder in Australian Open clash with World No.1

Australian Open quarter-finalist Serena Williams was left feeling embarrassed as she accidentally walked out of court ahead of her opponent Simona Halep.

The duo were about to start their fourth round tie as Serena accidentally walked out on court ahead of Halep when the court announcer presented the 'world No 1'.

The Romanian is currently on top of the women's world ranking with the American tennis star down in 16th place.

The two superstars had made the walk from their changing rooms when the announcer said "please welcome world No.1" an Serena who was wearing headphones walked out into the court.

The 37-year-old then remembered it was not her the announcer was referring as she quickly made her way back into the changing room.

Halep came out smiling at her opponent's mix-up, as she walked out and waved the crowd moments later.

However, Serena got the better of her counterpart Halep 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The American occupied the world No 1 ranking on eight separate occasions between 2002 and 2017 for a total of 319 weeks combined.

On the sixth time, she was on top of the charts for a record 186 consecutive weeks, equaling the record set by German legend Steffi Graf.

Her grand total puts her behind only Graf and fellow American Martina Navratilova in tennis history.

Serena took a break from tennis when she had daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr with husband Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, in September 2017.

She then slipped down the ranking as she missed a number of tournaments during her maternity leave.

However she has been gradually climbing back to a place among the elite of the game following her return to the court last year.
