Liverpool star defender Virgil van Dijk on Monday night, November 19, showed his class side as he consoled a match official who lost his mother moments before Holland's clash against Germany in the Uefa Nations League.
During the match, Dijk scored the equalising goal to send his country into the Nations League finals.
Timo Werner and Leroy Sane handed Germany a two-goal advantage within 19 minutes of game play at the Veltins-Arena before Quincy Promes and Van Dijk scored late to seal a vital 2-2 draw for the Dutch.
Dijk latched onto Tonny Vilhena's cross in the 90th minute, volleying home past a helpless Manuel Neuer.
The Oranje captain then approached Romanian official Ovidiu Hategan broke down in tears as the match reached its crescendo to comfort him.
According to the Metro UK, it emerged before the encounter that the referee on the night, Ovidiu Hategan, had just lost his mother but had made the decision to officiate regardless.
Speaking on his gesture, Dijk admitted that he felt sorry for the match official and took time to wish him strength.
'That man broke down, stood with tears in his eyes because he had just lost his mother,'' Metro UK quoted the Liverpool star.
"I wished him strength and said that he had blown well. It's a small thing, but maybe it helps him," he added.
