England legend Gascoigne charged with sexual assault

Former England international Paul Gascoigne has been charged for gender harassment on a woman onboard a train.

The 51-year-old was rounded up at Durham station on August 20 and the British Transport Police confirmed he has been charged with one count of assault for touching the woman.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "A man is due to appear in court next month charged in connection with the sexual assault of a woman onboard a train from York to Durham.

It added that Gascoigne was charged "with one count of sexual assault by touching, contrary to section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. The charge relates to an incident onboard a train on 20 August this year."

The former Tottenham and Everton defender will appear at Newton Aycliffe magistrates court on December 11.

Gascoigne represented the Three Lions in the 1990 World Cup in Italy but were knocked out in the semi finals by West Germany.

He was also a part of the England team that hosted the 1996 edition of the European championships and were also eliminated by Germany in the semis.

The England legend has also undergone rehabilitation for excessive intake of alcohol in the past.
